Nevada Gaming Control Board Passes Online Poker Regulations

Today (December 22nd 2011) was a very important day for online poker players in the United States. Today there was a vote held at the Nevada Gaming Control Board in Las Vegas to determine whether online poker would be legalized. The vote today was 4 – 0 in favour of regulating online poker and making it legal to play in the state of Nevada. For the time 1st time in history online poker is now legal in Nevada, but there currently aren’t any licensed poker rooms.

It’s expected that the 1st licensed poker rooms in the state of Nevada will open around February 1st 2012. The poker rooms will only be able to operate in the state of Nevada for now. However, licensed operators in Nevada will be able to offer interstate online poker games if the Federal government legalizes online poker. This would give the Nevada operators a huge opportunity to cash in on the US market in the future if the Federal government decides to regulate online poker on a national level.

It has already been reported that six companies have applied for a license to operate in Nevada. The companies that have already submitted an application include Bally Technologies, Shuffle Master, International Game Technology, South Point Poker, Cantor Gaming and 888 Holdings. The only online poker operator that applied for a license thus far is 888 Holdings and if they can break into the US market they could definitely start competing with the big boys in the online poker industry.

There hasn’t been any word on how many operators will receive a license in Nevada initially, but I’m sure there will be several poker rooms operating in the state in 2012. Now that Nevada has taken the steps necessary to regulate and legalize online poker I’m sure we’re going to see other states in the USA follow suit in the New Year. Once other states see how Nevada regulated online poker they’ll be able to use the same model to legalize online poker and it might not be long before online poker is legalized in the USA.

Players that want to play with the licensed Nevada poker rooms will need to be able to provide ID and must be 21+ years of age just like in Vegas casinos. What Options are there for US Poker Players Online?

Since the April 15^th Blackout, US poker players have lost the privilege of playing at the world’s biggest poker sites such as PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and UB.com.

Actually, scratch that, UB.com is now dead (fired 99% of their employees in May 2011) and UK poker rooms such as 888 Poker and Party.Bwin now seem to be the real players.

So what options do you have if you’re a poker player from the US? This is a question that I get asked all the time. However the difficulty is that the rules are constantly changing. The US DOJ seems to be taking poker gambling sites and sports betting operators down left right and centre each week. For example, some legendary sportsbooks such as Bookmaker.com, BetCris and BetEd.com were taken down recently. BetUS.com and Sportsbook.com stopped accepting US players too!

In terms of poker, the few remaining and legitimate rooms to play at are Carbon Poker, Lock Poker and Bodog. Lock Poker recently announced plans to stay open for the long term. However the problem with these rooms is that because their traffic has increased by more than 150% it has made their payment processors and support team work overtime. Emails from the Carbon Poker reps are much slower than they used to be (which you can’t really blame them for), but the main problem is still depositing and withdrawing your funds if you’re from the US.

Victory Poker, one of the “up and comers” in the industry, recently closed their online poker room. The VictoryPoker.com website will now become an affiliate site promoting other poker rooms and their entire player based has been moved over to the Cake Network. TruePoker.com also tried their best to remain open however they domains were seized by the FBI and subsequently lost their US facing poker site.

Bodog has always has been an OK poker room for fish and recreational players. However, they really lack a proper weekly guaranteed tournament and multi-tabling software for professional grinders which limits their appeal to me.

The worst thing for most US poker players at 2+2 and PocketFives.com is that since May 2011 Carbon Poker ceased offering 27% rakeback to players. Before they changed this, Carbon Poker were the only US-friendly room that offers rakeback. There are now no choices for US players who want to receive rakeback (however you can still take advantage of VIP and loyalty points at Carbon which are pretty much the same thing).

Cake Poker and Power Poker are both another US-friendly network (at the time of writing – June 2011) which are a really good choice. Although poor software and promos let Cake Poker down in the past, beggars can’t afford to be choosers these days. Cake Poker offers a top 100% up to $1,000 bonus for new players. You can also still use PokerTracker 3 here (data mining software and Poker HUD) which is another good thing for pros.

The Float Play in Texas Holdem

The float play in Texas Holdem is a type of bluff played over two streets or more. “Floating” your opponents means calling their bets with nothing, waiting for them to show weakness, and then bluffing them off the pot at a later street. To put this in layman terms, floating is about “calling your opponent’s bluff”.

What most poker strategy articles at other poker school websites won’t tell you is that a lot of the time you’ve got to be calling your opponent’s bluffs even when you’re behind. It’s a simple fact that if you fold to your opponent every time he makes a raise and you don’t have anything good enough to call him, you’re going to lose an awful lot of pots.

That’s why we “float” our opponents in situations when we have position. Having position on your opponent means that you are last to act in a hand. So, if the game flows clockwise around the table than the player in MP would have position on the UTG, Bid Blind and Small Blind. Likewise, LP has position on MP because he is last to act in all of the hands.

Having position on your opponents is a huge advantage because you a) you get to see your opponent’s strength before you make a move, b) he’s less likely to bluff you out of position since he doesn’t know what you’ll do, and c) your bluffs will be more effective (+EV) from position.

Conditions for Floating Opponents

In order to “float” your opponent successfully there are several conditions. Not all of these conditions are necessary to float your opponent, but it’s best to limit your floats to these circumstances.

Type of Opponent: Floating works best against loose aggressive players (LAG) who regularly continuation bet flops or double barrel with air. Floating LAGs is most profitable because they’ll be betting with a weaker range of hands, meaning there’s a greater possibility of them checking if you call them (allowing you to raise them afterwards).

Position on your Opponent: Having position on your opponent is CRUCIAL in order to float his bets successfully. Having position on your opponent allows you to spot any weaknesses (i.e. checking) before you make a move on him with a pot size raise.

One Opponent in the Pot: 99% of the time you can only float a pot if there’s only one opponent in it. If there’s two or more opponents than floating will just get you into trouble since it’s more likely one of them will have a hand.

What Hands Should we Float Our Opponent With?

You can float your opponent with any range of hands since you’re basically expecting him to check the next street and bluff the pot off him with a big pot-size raise. When you float your opponent you’re expecting to bluff him off the pot before it goes to a show down on the river.

That being said, it always makes sense to float when you have at least some equity in the pot. For example, if you have 72 off suit and the flop is full of middling cards like 5-6-8 than there’s a good chance that your opponent could be drawing a decent hand.
